"No doubt Joëlle Léandre doesn’t already have enough illustrious partners—she must also reveal new ones: Quentin Sirjacq here, a young pianist among her students, with whom she recently recorded Out of Nowhere.

In this context, Léandre judges her improvisation alongside a disciple of discretion: a sequence of nearly imperceptible chords (Ruin) and seemingly hesitant progressions that reveal Sirjacq’s fondness for certain classical masters (Morton Feldman, on several occasions; Erik Satie, on Hallucinations). It is an art of restraint—at least when the pianist does not let himself be carried away by a more overt lyricism—to which the double bassist responds with a grating bow, a percussive interlude (Fragment 2), or a kind of dark romanticism (The Call).

From lines of escape (Léandre) to points of landing or suspension (Sirjacq), Out of Nowhere becomes a harvest of the moment, one around which it will be possible to circle for a long time."
