But we were also deeply moved by the profoundly sonic and musical dimension of his writing: this maritime, seafaring world haunted by sailors’ songs; this island, at once hostile and luxuriant, never truly deserted and always unsettling.

In an ironic twist of fate, many years after writing this first novel, Stevenson chose to end his life in the Samoan archipelago in Polynesia, where he consistently championed autonomist voices during the colonial period.”
