In 1943, in Nice, Charlotte Salomon, a young German Jewish woman, went to see a doctor and entrusted him with a box. Inside, he discovered some 1,300 gouaches, created between 1940 and 1942, accompanied by texts and musical indications like the libretto of an opera, which she titled Life? or Theatre? In her paintings, in the manner of a graphic novel, Charlotte Salomon recounts the story of her family from 1913 to 1940: her youth in Berlin, the rise of Nazism and antisemitic persecution, her love affair with a music teacher, and then her exile in France, where she joined her maternal grandparents, who had taken refuge in the South before the war broke out.

Breathing life back into it
Drawing on the body of work left to posterity by Charlotte Salomon—born in Berlin in 1917 and killed in Auschwitz in 1943—Delphine Coulin and Muriel Coulin (The Stopover) film the project exactly as the young woman had imagined and painted it.
