Throughout time and across all cultures, humans have ritualized the moments in life when they felt most strongly their belonging to the animal world — that is, essentially, their mortality.
To be human is to know that one is mortal. As far as we can observe, we are the only animal species that marks time… that remembers and commemorates… that agrees to meet… that plans… that marks and remarks upon the movements of our planet and of our mortal body, in order not only to observe nature but to celebrate it, appease it, dance with it… and also, progressively, as technology develops — to tame it, control it, subdue it, deny it… even destroy it.”
